ABSTRACT:
Research has increasingly shown that the brain, in the early ages, is largely influenced by external factors, both positive and negative that will influence the development of the individual throughout life. It is then important to identify children who under the influence of risk factors, exhibit developmental changes in order to direct them to appropriate services. The developmental screening is the administration of a formal instrument that detects the children who need further evaluation. The Ages and Stages Questionnaires, Portuguese version (ASQ-PT) is composed of 21 questionnaires between 2 and 60 months of age to be applied by the parents / carers of children and constitutes itself as a formal instrument for screening. The 21 questionnaires were administered to a total sample of 1908 children living in Portugal and Azores Islands, and in 1022 of these children had one or more risk factors. The results showed that most of the averages of the dimensions of the children with the presence of at least one risk factor are lower than in children without risk factors, contributing to the analysis of the validity of the ASQ-PT.
